George wasnât sure how Emma made it through all the cars as quickly as she did without getting hit, it took him twice as long, partially because he carried one of the five-gallon Igloo drink dispensers, and partially because heâd had to dodge cars, almost getting hit twice despite the bright white button-up and t-shirt he wore that reflected all the headlights like a sunbeam and the fact he was six feet two.
âGeorge!â Blake was parked several cars down with his E-Type, and people were already gathering around it.
George waved. âLooking good!â
Blake gave him a thumbs up. Yep, George had known this would be a good idea. In a town this small, his car would normally be old news, but because he lived in Charleston, the town over, not many people had seen the E-Type in town. This exposure could only be good for him.
With a quick thumbs-up of his own, George headed for the concession stand.
Emma stood out front talking across the counter to Jessie, Alex, Grace, and Liam. He came up beside her, lifting the lemonade to the counter, then leaning on it. She turned her back on him, icing him out. She pointed toward Georgeâs car.
âWould you guys mind grabbing the last two five-gallon containers?â Emma asked, pointedly looking at Adrian.
It was Alex and Liam who headed out, after making comments about how the âCuda was coming along, and much to Emmaâs blatant disappointment, at least blatant in Georgeâs mind, not Adrian. She headed into the concession stand through the side door and unloaded her boxes while making a valiant attempt to deflect Adrianâs attention and Georgeâs amused gaze. She was doing a better job of ignoring George than Adrian who walked so close behind her that he flat-tired herâimpressive given she was in heels.
âAdrian!â she yelped and bent over to fix her shoe. When she came back up, the vein in her neck pulsed. Oh, yeah, she was ticked.
George chuckled again. Adrian was definitely taking advantage of Mabelâs absence. Hopefully, by the end of the night, Emma would accept that Adrian wasnât interested in Mabel and Emma would give up her matchmaking scheme.
âWhoâs watching your dad tonight?â Jessie asked.
âAnne-Marie,â Emma said with a smile.
âOh, good,â Jessie said. âI like her.â
âI wouldâve volunteered immediately,â Adrian said, âbut I couldnât miss this.â
George didnât bother waiting for Emmaâs response to that. He almost felt bad for Adrian. Almost. Instead, George searched for his sisters, finding them parked close to the concession stand. They were talking to Faith and Lucy, the owner of the Starlight Drive-in. His nephews played catch close by in the headlights of their dadâs trucks, which would have to be turned off in a few moments.
Shooting Emma one more glance, which she returned with a glare, George sidled up to his sisters. At least they wouldnât give him the cold shoulder. If she wanted to stew, heâd let her stew.
Jenny extended her arm out to him the moment she saw him coming, and he went into a side hug.
